A group of youth believed to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) reportedly stormed the Bono Regional Forestry Commission office in Sunyani on Monday, December 9, causing extensive damage and property loss.
The armed group, wielding machetes, seized two patrol vehicles from the office, which also houses the Sunyani Forest Services Division (FSD). Additionally, they made away with confiscated chainsaw machines, motorbikes, and other items stored at the premises, significantly disrupting operations.
This incident comes despite President-elect John Dramani Mahama’s appeal for calm and restraint. In his acceptance speech on December 9, Mahama urged NDC supporters to avoid acts of vandalism and instead focus on constructive efforts to rebuild the nation.
Similar vandalism was reported at the Forestry Commission depot in Achimota, Accra, where unidentified individuals stole valuable items, including 24 air conditioners, laptops, and essential equipment. They also attempted to seize keys to newly acquired vehicles but failed.
Though the police intervened during the Sunyani incident, they were unable to prevent the destruction caused by the group. These acts of vandalism have raised concerns about maintaining law and order in the wake of Ghana’s 2024 elections.
