The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) plan to rerun elections at a polling station in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, citing the clear victory of their candidate, Elikplim Akurugu, in the December 7 parliamentary elections.
The EC’s decision comes after the parliamentary results for Dome-Kwabenya were suspended for the third time, following chaos during the tallying process on Saturday, December 27, 2024. Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the EC’s Director of Training, attributed the need for a rerun to the absence of a pink sheet for the Abokobi Women’s Development Centre 2 polling station.
At a media briefing, Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, the NDC Deputy Director of Elections and IT, vehemently opposed the EC’s decision, stating that the issue at the polling station should not alter the election outcome.
“There was a difference of 1,154 votes. If there’s an issue with one polling station, that station should simply be excluded. The voter population for that station is 689. Subtracting 689 from the margin still leaves our candidate, Elikplim Akurugu, as the winner,” he asserted.
Dr. Tanko-Computer criticized the EC for what he described as errors in arithmetic and mishandling of the situation. “These people have issues with arithmetic, so we’ll help them with the math. Elikplim Akurugu has won this election, and we will not accept their so-called rerun,” he stated emphatically.
The controversy stems from inconsistencies in the tallying process, which have led to repeated suspensions of the results. The EC’s announcement of a rerun has sparked significant pushback from the NDC, which insists that the current results unequivocally favor their candidate.
This development further escalates tensions in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, raising questions about the EC’s handling of the elections and the implications of the rerun decision.
