NDC Maintains Opposition to Election Date Change, Citing NPP’s Previous Rejection

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has defended its decision to reject the Electoral Commission’s suggestion to shift the election date from December 7 to November 7. In an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections, Tanko Rashid Conputer, highlighted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had opposed a similar proposal in 2016.

Rashid Conputer raised a rhetorical question, questioning the shift in the NPP’s stance over the years. He noted that the NPP vehemently opposed the proposal in 2016, providing reasons for their rejection, which influenced the electoral process in 2020. The Deputy Director emphasized, “So, what we are asking now is, what has changed?”

The proposal surfaced during the recent Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on January 22, 2024. Dr. Omane Boamah, NDC’s Director of Elections, affirmed the party’s commitment to maintaining the current election date.

Rashid Conputer explained that the EC’s 2016 attempt was viewed as an experiment by all political parties, with the NPP strongly opposing it during IPAC discussions. He underscored the NDC’s unwavering opposition to the proposal, declaring it non-negotiable and asserting that the party will not reconsider its stance.

“Clearly, we said we are completely against it, and we are not going to support it. We have made that very clear to the EC and the other parties, and this is not an issue we should be discussing right now.”
