The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reaffirmed its decision to contest the upcoming Akwatia by-election on September 2, 2025, while suggesting that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) recent withdrawal from the Tamale Central race is a calculated political move.
The NPP announced it would not field a candidate in the Tamale Central by-election following the death of the area’s MP, Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed, in the August 6 military helicopter crash. While welcoming the decision as “the best they have taken in recent times,” the NDC implied it was designed to avoid defeat and attract public sympathy ahead of the Akwatia polls.
“This is not the first time that a political party has refused to contest in a by-election. The NDC refused to contest in Ejisu after the demise of John Kumah,” Deputy National Communications Officer Godwin Ako Gunn stated, adding that the Akwatia seat was under legal dispute until the death of the late Ernest Kumi.
Mr. Gunn also cautioned against taking the NPP’s word at face value, recalling that in the Ablekuma North rerun, the party had initially declared non-participation but later campaigned actively.
The statement extended condolences to the family of Ernest Kumi and the relatives of the eight victims of the recent helicopter crash. Mr. Gunn urged NDC members to remain mindful and respectful in their public statements during this period of mourning.
