Armed men from Ghana’s National Security, led by Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations, raided the private residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison on the morning of Wednesday, March 19, 2025.
The raid took place at Dr. Addison’s Roman Ridge home in Accra while he was present. Eyewitnesses reported that the heavily armed security personnel, some wearing balaclavas and wielding AK-47 rifles, disabled the property’s CCTV system before conducting a search.
According to Asaase News, the security team demanded that Dr. Addison lead them to supposed “vaults” in his home. However, he denied having any hidden cash storage. Despite this, the officers proceeded to ransack the house but found neither vaults nor significant sums of money. Frustrated, they seized the CCTV monitor and control unit before leaving the premises.
A close associate of the Addison family stated that the former governor, his wife, and their entire household were left deeply shaken by the raid. A retired senior official of the Bank of Ghana described the incident as unprecedented, saying, “This is the first time in the history of Ghana that such a thing is happening to a Governor of the Bank of Ghana. This is both scary and messy.”
Dr. Addison is the second high-profile former official targeted in such an operation since President John Mahama’s administration began on January 7, 2025.
On February 10, 2025, over 15 armed security officers raided the home of Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s longest-serving Finance Minister, at Labone, Accra. Unlike Dr. Addison’s case, that raid was caught on CCTV, and the footage was later released to the public.
The recurring pattern of raids on former officials from the previous government has raised concerns about the state of security and political tensions in Ghana.
