Two emergency medical technicians with the National Ambulance Service narrowly escaped injury after unknown gunmen opened fire on their ambulance near Yendi in the Northern Region.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, March 2, 2026, while the crew was returning to Kpassa after transferring a critical patient to the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
The technicians, Senior Emergency Medical Technician Anthony Donkor and Emergency Medical Technician Alexander Adu Blowing, were travelling in an ambulance with registration number GV-657-20 when the attack happened.
According to the National Ambulance Service, the vehicle was approaching the first security barrier at Yendi at about 3:12 a.m. when the assailants suddenly opened fire.
The gunshots shattered the ambulance’s windscreen and damaged both front tyres, placing the crew in a dangerous situation.
Despite the attack, Donkor managed to maintain control of the vehicle. In what officials described as a quick and courageous reaction, he immediately engaged reverse gear and drove the damaged ambulance about half a kilometre to the nearby Yendi Police checkpoint for safety.
Both technicians escaped the incident unharmed.
However, the ambulance sustained significant damage, including a collapsed windscreen and two deflated front tyres. Authorities say a full inspection will be carried out to determine whether the vehicle suffered additional ballistic damage.
The matter has been reported to the police, who are expected to begin investigations to identify the attackers.
Officials of the National Ambulance Service praised the crew for their composure and bravery during the incident, noting that emergency medical personnel often face serious risks while responding to emergencies and transporting patients.
