A 42-year-old woman and her three children have tragically drowned in a water-filled galamsey pit at Wassa Dunkwa in the Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region.
The incident occurred on Saturday, February 28, near an abandoned illegal mining site that had become dangerously waterlogged. According to a local source, the family had gone to the area in search of firewood when the tragedy unfolded.
Reports indicate that the three boys, led by their 14-year-old elder brother, gathered firewood and began their return journey ahead of their mother. Along the way, they stopped at the abandoned pit and entered the water.
Their mother, upon arriving and noticing that her children were in danger, reportedly attempted to rescue them. However, she also got into difficulty and drowned.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service, specifically the Asankragwa Divisional Command, later recovered the bodies. The deceased were deposited at the morgue of the Catholic Hospital for preservation and further processes.
The Public Relations Officer of the Western Central Police Command, Beatrice Turkson, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing. She added that a detailed statement would be issued in due course.
The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the dangers posed by abandoned illegal mining pits, commonly known as galamsey sites, which often become death traps when filled with rainwater.
