The Ministry of Interior has declared Monday, September 23, 2024, a statutory public holiday in observance of Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day.
This announcement, made on September 19, honors Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, whose birthday falls on September 21.
Although the official date for the celebration is September 21, which this year falls on a Saturday, the public holiday has been shifted to the following Monday.
The Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey, issued a statement urging the public to observe the day nationwide. This declaration was made in line with the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601), as amended by the New Public Holidays Act of 2018.
Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Nkrumah, born on September 21, 1909, in Nkroful, in Ghana’s Western Region.
He led the country to independence and became its first president. This year marks the 115th anniversary of his birth.
