Ghanaian football legend Sulley Muntari has backed Mohammed Kudus to eventually become the Black Stars captain, but he insists that the process should be handled carefully.
In an interview with TV3, Muntari emphasized that the West Ham United midfielder is still developing and should be allowed to focus on his game rather than being rushed into a leadership role.
“Kudus, no matter what, is going to be the captain of the national team one day. Let it be smooth for him, don’t just rush him. He doesn’t even need the band… let him just enjoy his football,” Muntari said.
The Black Stars captaincy has been a subject of controversy, especially under Otto Addo. Kudus was named captain for a doubleheader against Sudan in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, but Jordan Ayew later took over. Other players, including Thomas Partey and Alexander Djiku, have also served as captains in recent years.
Muntari believes Kudus is yet to reach his full potential, stating:
“What we are seeing are just flashes of how great he can be. That guy is just amazing.”
