Mobile Money Operators Threaten Nationwide Strike Over Galamsey Activities

Mobile Money (MoMo) operators in Ghana are threatening to embark on a nationwide strike due to the increasing impact of illegal mining, known as “galamsey,” on their business operations and livelihoods. The operators argue that galamsey activities have destabilized mining communities, leading to a decline in transactions and rising insecurity.

Galamsey has long been a significant issue in Ghana, causing environmental destruction and jeopardizing water bodies and farmlands. Despite several government interventions, enforcement remains weak, and the practice persists in many regions.

In a statement, the Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana (MoMAG) expressed concern over the “uncontrolled activities of illegal miners” leading to environmental degradation, economic threats, and increased risks to human safety. MoMAG highlighted that these activities are not only damaging ecosystems but also putting MoMo agents at risk of armed robbery and reducing their ability to conduct business.

The association called on the government to take urgent steps to combat galamsey, including enforcing mining laws, providing alternative livelihoods for those engaged in illegal mining, promoting sustainable mining practices, and ensuring the safety of MoMo agents. They also demanded an immediate ban on the use of galamsey equipment, warning that failure to address the issue would result in an indefinite strike.

MoMAG’s demands come amid growing calls from various sectors for stronger action against galamsey to protect the environment and local communities.
