The Minority Caucus in Parliament has strongly protested Speaker Alban Bagbin’s use of the term “micro-minority” to describe their group during a parliamentary session on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
Expressing their dissatisfaction, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin took the floor to challenge the Speaker’s remarks, stating that the label was inappropriate and undermined the role and dignity of the Minority in Parliament.
“Mr. Speaker, we do not have any micro minority. The Minority Caucus hereby protests the description given to us by Mr. Speaker,” Afenyo-Markin asserted.
In a pointed reminder, Afenyo-Markin highlighted the role of the Minority in supporting Speaker Bagbin’s election to his position. He noted that the Minority stood by him when some Majority members allegedly conspired against his nomination.
“Mr. Speaker, we seconded the motion for your election. When the so-called majority was conspiring against you, we protested and stopped them. It was us—the Minority of conscience,” he said.
The Minority Leader urged Speaker Bagbin to address the caucus as “Minority simpliciter” rather than using terms they perceive as disparaging.
