The Minority Caucus in Parliament, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has donated GH¢200,000 to support traders affected by the devastating fire that swept through Kantamanto Market in Accra on January 2, 2025.
During a visit to the market, Afenyo-Markin expressed heartfelt sympathy for the traders who lost goods and property in the blaze.
“We appeal to the government to come to your aid. Recently, we approved the budget, and we are aware that the contingency fund is available to assist in times of crisis,” he stated.
He further appealed to financial institutions that had issued loans to the affected traders to consider reducing interest rates to ease their financial burden.
Describing the donation as a “modest contribution,” Afenyo-Markin said, “This is GH¢200,000; it is a modest contribution from us, the mighty Minority, to support you.”
The gesture is intended to offer immediate relief as traders work to rebuild their businesses. The fire incident has had a profound impact on livelihoods, with many still struggling to recover.
