The Minority Caucus in Parliament has demanded the immediate suspension of the Ghana–US deportation agreement, describing it as unconstitutional.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, the Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee, Samuel Abu Jinapor, argued that the deal had not been ratified by Parliament as required by law.

“We therefore reiterate our call on the Government to suspend, with immediate effect, the unconstitutional implementation of this agreement until Parliament has duly exercised its constitutional mandate to ratify same,” Jinapor said.

The Minority also urged government to provide full clarity on the processes and safeguards surrounding the arrangement, stressing the need to protect Ghana’s national security.

“We urge Government to provide full clarity on the processes, safeguards, and other broader implications associated with receiving these deportees, including the measures, if any, that have been taken to protect Ghana’s security interests,” he added.

The MPs cited a similar incident in 2016, when the Mahama administration was criticized for accepting Guantánamo Bay detainees without parliamentary approval.

They maintain that bypassing due constitutional procedure undermines parliamentary oversight and exposes the country to potential security risks.
