The Minority in Parliament has accused operatives of the National Security Secretariat of engaging in theft during their controversial raid on the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, March 20, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin condemned the raid, describing it as a “Rambo-style” operation. He alleged that GH₵10,000, which was reportedly on Dr. Addison’s bed, had gone missing after the search.
“Unfortunately for the Governor, some GH₵10,000 cedis on his bed could not be found,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
He further claimed that valuables belonging to Dr. Addison’s wife, including earrings and necklaces, were also stolen during the operation.
The raid, which took place on March 19 at Roman Ridge in Accra, has sparked outrage, with critics accusing the government of using security operatives to intimidate political opponents. Afenyo-Markin suggested that some of these operatives might not even be properly compensated, leading them to steal during such operations.
“Some of these hungry party foot soldiers, who parade themselves as national security operatives, are perhaps not even being paid, so they use these so-called operations as an opportunity to steal,” he alleged.
The Minority Leader described the incident as an unprecedented abuse of power, emphasizing that this was the first time in Ghana’s history that a former central bank governor had been treated in such a manner.
He further accused the government of weaponizing National Security to target appointees of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
“This lawlessness must stop. It is clear that the government has unleashed national security operatives on its opponents, particularly appointees of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” Afenyo-Markin charged.
The Minority is calling on the government to put an end to what it sees as politically motivated raids and ensure that National Security operatives operate within the law rather than being used as tools of political persecution.
