In the early hours of Sunday, November 12, 2023, around 7:20 am, several suburbs of Accra, Ghana, experienced a minor earth tremor, lasting only a few seconds. The affected areas included Weija, Mallam, Gbawe, SCC, and Bortianor. While the tremor induced panic among residents, there were no reports of injuries or property damage.
Eyewitnesses shared their experiences on social media platforms, with many describing the sudden shaking of their homes. One resident in Weija SCC recounted, “I was sitting in my living room when I felt the house start to shake.” Another resident mentioned, “I was cooking in the kitchen when I heard a shaking,” while a third resident said, “I was in bed when I felt the shaking.”
This recent incident follows a pattern of minor tremors in the Accra region. On March 10 of the same year, a similar tremor with a magnitude of 2.8 on the Richter scale was recorded by the Ghana Geological Survey Authority. Furthermore, on December 12, 2022, parts of Accra experienced tremors on three occasions, with the first occurring around 6:53 am in the western part of Accra, the second around 10 am at the same locations, and the third at 11:53 am, approximately 10 km from Gbawe. These recurring tremors have raised awareness and concerns among residents of Accra regarding the geological activity in the region.
