Ministry of Youth and Sports Directs GFA to Inspect University of Ghana Stadium for CAF Approval to Avoid Playing Outside the Country

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has instructed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to request the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to inspect the University of Ghana Stadium for approval as a Category 3 match venue.

This directive comes following CAF’s decision to withdraw the Baba Yara Stadium from hosting CAF Category 3 matches, citing concerns over the condition of the pitch.

The Ministry confirmed that the issues raised by CAF regarding the Baba Yara Stadium are being addressed, with the facility set to close after the 2025 AFCON qualifier match against Angola to undergo renovations.

In addition to requesting the inspection of the University of Ghana Stadium, the Ministry also highlighted that the Accra Sports Stadium, which has resolved most issues identified during CAF’s previous inspection, is expected to meet the standards for hosting Category 3 matches.

However, the University of Ghana Stadium, despite hosting CAF Category 2 matches since its inauguration, has yet to be inspected by CAF’s independent inspectors for Category 3 consideration.

The Ministry expressed confidence that both the University of Ghana Stadium and the Accra Sports Stadium will meet the necessary requirements after the inspection.

Additionally, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to upgrading other national stadiums to meet CAF’s standards for Category 3 matches.
