Collins Adu, a 28-year-old small-scale miner, has been sentenced by the Tarkwa Circuit Court to one day in prison and fined GH¢8,400 for stealing a motorbike valued at GH¢13,500. Adu, who pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful entry and theft, faces an alternative sentence of seven years of hard labor if he fails to pay the fine.
Presiding over the case, Mrs. Hathia Ama Manu heard that the complainant, Francis Arhin, a commercial motorbike rider from Bawdie in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality, discovered his unregistered Haojin motorbike missing on the morning of October 19, 2024, after parking it at his residence the previous night.
Chief Inspector Abraham Ayitey, prosecuting, explained that Arhin quickly informed neighbors and friends in Bawdie and nearby communities about the theft, seeking their assistance in locating the stolen vehicle.
On October 27, 2024, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Adu was spotted riding the motorbike in Wassa Bawdie. He was apprehended and handed over to the Bawdie Police. Upon investigation, Adu admitted to sneaking into Arhin’s home in the early hours of October 19 to steal the motorbike, which he had been using for personal errands.
The complainant was invited to the police station, where he confirmed the recovered motorbike as his property. Adu expressed remorse and pleaded for leniency, but the court’s judgment underscored the seriousness of the offense.
