The Ghana Police Service has secured a 25-year prison sentence with hard labour against a 30-year-old man for his role in a 2022 armed robbery at a mining site in Manso Akwasiso in the Ashanti South Region.
The convict, Dominic Ofori, popularly known as “Fanta,” was sentenced by the Bekwai Circuit Court after pleading guilty to robbery, contrary to Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Ofori was arrested on February 16, 2026, after years on the run following the incident.
According to police reports, on March 20, 2022, the Manso Adubia District Police received intelligence that a group of armed men from Manso Abodom were planning to attack a mining site at Manso Akwasiso to rob the owner of gold concentrate.
Acting swiftly on the information, officers mounted a coordinated operation and laid an ambush at the mining site.
At about 5:30 p.m. that same day, four armed men reportedly stormed the site, fired indiscriminately, and robbed miners of their gold concentrate. The police surveillance team intervened, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
Three of the suspects — Abu Abubakar, Musah Latif, and Gideon Takyi — sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation and were pronounced dead on arrival at St Martins Catholic Hospital at Agroyesum.
Dominic Ofori managed to escape at the time but was eventually tracked down and arrested in 2026. He was subsequently arraigned before the Bekwai Circuit Court, where he admitted to the offence and received a 25-year custodial sentence with hard labour.
The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling violent crime and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice.
