Manchester United have named Ruben Amorim as their new head coach, with the Portuguese manager set to take charge on November 11 after concluding his commitments with Sporting Lisbon. Amorim has signed a contract with United until June 2027, with an option for an additional year. Sporting Lisbon will receive a €11 million transfer fee for the 39-year-old.
Amorim’s debut as United’s manager will be an away match against Ipswich Town on November 24, following the international break. Until then, former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who took on interim duties, will remain on the sidelines. Van Nistelrooy led the team to a 5-2 victory over Leicester City in the League Cup after Erik ten Hag was dismissed on Monday due to poor performances, leaving United in 14th place after winning only three of their first nine games this season.
Before his move, Amorim will lead Sporting Lisbon in a Champions League match against Manchester City on November 5 and wrap up with an away game at Braga on November 10. Known for revitalizing Sporting Lisbon, Amorim has won two league titles since joining in 2020, breaking a 19-year drought in his first full season. His Sporting side currently leads the Primeira Liga, with an impressive record of nine wins, 30 goals scored, and just two conceded.
Amorim brings a background of success as a former midfielder, winning 10 major titles with Benfica and earning 14 caps for Portugal. He began his coaching career in 2018 and rapidly ascended the ranks, joining Sporting Lisbon from Braga in a high-profile transfer. His first match at Old Trafford will see him leading United against Bodo/Glimt in the UEFA Europa League.
