A 36-year-old unemployed man, Foster Nyarko, has been sentenced to two years in prison for stealing a laptop from the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment.
Nyarko, who initially visited the Ministry seeking a cleaning job, pleaded guilty to unlawful entry and stealing a laptop valued at GHC24,745 before an Accra Circuit Court. Presiding Judge Basilia Adjei-Tawiah sentenced him to one year for unlawful entry and two years for theft, with both sentences running concurrently.
The prosecution revealed that Nyarko had previously been jailed for stealing a mobile phone at the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice while job hunting earlier this year.
According to the complainant, a lawyer at the Ministry, Nyarko visited the premises on December 4, 2024, in search of a cleaning job. However, instead of meeting the Human Resource Director as directed, he proceeded to the second floor and entered the office of the Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation. Finding the office unoccupied, he took an HP laptop, concealed it in his backpack, and left.
Investigations led to his arrest, and he admitted to selling the laptop to an unidentified buyer in Takoradi.
