A young man believed to be in his 20s has died after falling into a well at Ada Kasseh while attempting to fetch water for a bath.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when the cement slab covering the well reportedly collapsed. Eyewitnesses said the victim lost his balance and fell into the well as the concrete cover gave way.
According to residents, the broken slab also fell into the well and landed on the victim, trapping him and making it difficult for him to escape.
A rescue team eventually retrieved the man after nearly an hour of efforts. Witnesses said he was still breathing when he was pulled out but sadly died on the way to the hospital.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns among residents about unsafe and poorly secured wells in the community. Many residents blamed property owners for failing to properly maintain or cover wells on their premises.
Community members also indicated that they contacted the Ghana National Fire Service and the local assembly member to assist with the rescue.
The Assembly Member for the Kasseh Electoral Area, Ebenezer Tetteh Kpodo, described the incident as unfortunate and noted that many wells in the area are old and require reconstruction or reinforcement.
He urged residents to report dangerous wells in their neighbourhoods by taking photos or videos and submitting them to his office so authorities can take action against property owners who fail to secure them.
