Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says President John Dramani Mahama will soon announce a decisive and uncompromising campaign against illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey.
The move comes in the wake of the August 6 helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, which claimed eight lives, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
Addressing the press on Thursday, August 14, Mr. Ablakwa said the President has resolved to confront the menace with unprecedented determination.
“I can confirm to you that you are going to see a fight that has never been witnessed before in this country. President Mahama is going to lead a very ruthless and relentless fight against galamsey,” he said.
According to him, the decision was reaffirmed during a cabinet meeting where the President made it clear that the battle against illegal mining would be waged as an urgent national priority.
The planned measures, Mr. Ablakwa noted, will mark a new chapter in the government’s anti-galamsey efforts, focusing on protecting the environment, safeguarding water bodies, and securing livelihoods in affected areas.
