Ghana is set to present a historic resolution at the United Nations General Assembly on March 25, 2026, seeking to declare the Transatlantic Slave Trade as the gravest crime against humanity.

The initiative is being led by John Dramani Mahama in his role as the African Union Champion on Reparations. The date coincides with the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana, the resolution is being advanced in collaboration with the African Union, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and global African diaspora groups.

The proposed resolution aims to formally recognise the trafficking and enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity due to its scale, systemic nature, brutality, and long-term global impact.

If adopted, it would represent the first comprehensive resolution on slavery in the history of the United Nations.

Ahead of the event, a wreath-laying ceremony will be held at the African Burial Ground National Monument on March 24, followed by a high-level discussion on reparatory justice.

The initiative has received support from institutions such as the UNESCO and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, among others.

Ghana is urging all UN member states to support the resolution, describing it as a defining moment in the global pursuit of justice, historical recognition, and reparatory action.
