President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed the Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), Dr. Adam Atiku, following reports of alleged negligence that contributed to the recent death of a patient at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Ward.
The decision comes amid increasing concerns about the state of healthcare delivery at TTH, where several critical medical devices are said to be non-functional.
As part of efforts to address the issue, Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, paid an unannounced visit to the facility on Tuesday, April 22. His visit forms part of a broader assessment of healthcare challenges in the Northern Region.
During the visit, the Minister voiced serious concerns over the number of idle medical machines, despite payments reportedly made to suppliers. He also cited the water crisis affecting Tamale as a key factor disrupting hospital operations, describing it as a regional challenge in need of urgent presidential attention.
On resolving the hospital’s equipment challenges, Mr. Akandoh explained that the Ministry’s next steps would depend on the priorities outlined by hospital management. He encouraged the public to remain confident in the facility’s services.
“When we finish with them, we will all think through it, because I cannot do it all alone. I have to involve them, and we are thinking through it together. Everybody should remain calm and let us continue to patronise the facility,” the Minister said.
