President John Dramani Mahama has officially revoked all appointments of Chief Executives for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across Ghana.
A letter issued on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, signed by Calistus Mahama, the Executive Secretary to the President, confirmed the decision.
The directive, grounded in the powers vested in the President under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) as amended by the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940), includes:
– The revocation of appointments of all Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies.
– The termination of appointments of Assembly Members appointed under the relevant provisions of the Act.
The letter further instructed that Coordinating Directors of the affected MMDAs are to assume responsibility as acting Chief Executives. These interim measures will remain in place until permanent appointments are made.
