John Dramani Mahama, presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reaffirmed his campaign promise to eliminate certain taxes he described as “nuisance taxes” within the first 100 days of his administration.
During his campaign, Mr. Mahama criticized these taxes as overly burdensome on Ghanaians, pledging to alleviate their financial strain. The taxes slated for removal include:
- The E-levy
- The COVID levy
- The 10% levy on betting
- The emissions levy
- Import duties on vehicles and industrial/agricultural equipment
Although the Electoral Commission has yet to officially declare the presidential election results, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has conceded defeat. He extended his congratulations to Mr. Mahama and promised a smooth transition.
Dr. Bawumia also acknowledged the NDC’s victory in securing a majority of parliamentary seats, which positions the party to influence legislative decisions significantly.
At a press conference on December 8, NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey emphasized the party’s commitment to using its parliamentary majority responsibly. “We have secured a very significant majority that we aim to use for the progress of the people of Ghana,” he stated.
As the nation awaits the official presidential results, the NDC has expressed confidence in its victory and urged the Electoral Commission to expedite the declaration process.
