President-elect John Dramani Mahama and Kenyan President William Ruto have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties between Ghana and Kenya, focusing on trade, investment, and regional integration. The two leaders held a meeting on December 28, 2024, in Narok County, Kenya, where they discussed strategies to enhance collaboration in key sectors and advance intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework.
During the meeting, President Ruto expressed Kenya’s readiness to deepen relations with Ghana, emphasizing the potential for expanded cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, agriculture, mining, tourism, oil, and gas.
“Kenya will enhance her relations with Ghana to include more sectors in trade and investment, agriculture, mining, tourism, oil and gas. This will broaden opportunities for the people of the two countries and ensure our shared prosperity,” President Ruto stated.
President-elect Mahama echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of regional integration and economic collaboration to boost development and prosperity across the continent.
Discussions also focused on the potential of AfCFTA to increase trade across Africa. President Mahama reiterated his dedication to promoting regional trade and fostering stronger ties between Ghana and Kenya within the AfCFTA framework.
“As a former Chair of the African Union’s high-level committee on trade, I am committed to expanding trade between our countries under the framework of the AfCFTA. We will work to strengthen relations between Kenya and Ghana,” Mahama stated.
President Ruto expressed appreciation for Mahama’s support of Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the African Union Commission chairmanship, describing it as a significant act of regional solidarity.
President Mahama extended an invitation to President Ruto to attend his swearing-in ceremony on January 7, 2025, in Accra. President Ruto accepted the invitation, marking a continued spirit of cooperation and partnership between the two nations.
