President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish two major national projects in Damongo, the capital of the Savannah Region, a Catholic Science and Technology University and a new regional hospital.
Speaking at the Jubilee House in Accra during a courtesy call by the Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale, Most Reverend Philip Naameh, President Mahama said the projects aim to improve access to higher education and quality healthcare in northern Ghana. The initiatives, he added, will also promote the advancement of science, technology, and medical training in the region.
He revealed that initial funding for the Catholic Science and Technology University would come from a grant pledged by the President of China. The project, he explained, forms part of his administration’s vision to expand education through strategic international partnerships.
President Mahama further noted that the proposed regional hospital will serve as a teaching facility for the university’s Faculty of Medical Sciences, which will train medical doctors and other allied health professionals.
“The regional hospital shall also serve as a teaching facility for the proposed Catholic Science and Technology University, which will have a Faculty of Medical Sciences to train medical doctors and other allied health professionals,” he stated.
He also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to equip young people with practical, employable skills.
President Mahama commended the Catholic Church for its longstanding contributions to Ghana’s education, healthcare, and national development. Archbishop Naameh and his delegation proposed the name and location for the new university and discussed key issues affecting education and social welfare in northern Ghana.
The meeting was attended by Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu, Presidential Advisor Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah from the Office of the President, and Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah.
