The town of Derna in Libya has been devastated by catastrophic floods caused by the Mediterranean storm Daniel, resulting in a death toll of at least 5,000 people. Rescue efforts are underway to locate thousands more who are missing along the northeastern coast of the country.
Derna suffered the most severe impact from the storm, with a torrent of water engulfing the city, which has a population of 90,000. This disaster was triggered by the breaking of two dams, leading to the destruction of buildings and entire neighborhoods. Authorities in the eastern region of the divided OPEC nation reported that water levels had risen to the fourth or fifth floors of some structures.
