Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to prioritize internal restructuring and restoring public trust before electing a flagbearer for the 2028 presidential race.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View, Boamah cautioned party leaders and aspirants against placing personal ambitions ahead of party unity and renewal, especially in the wake of the NPP’s poor performance in the 2024 general elections.
“I have stated on various platforms that I am against this approach of selecting a flagbearer when we haven’t fixed the party,” Boamah said. “We need to make the party attractive again to win a general election.”
He stressed the need to rebuild internal structures and reconnect with the grassroots, noting that the party’s electoral setbacks were rooted in a loss of public trust.
“What led to our abysmal performance was the lack of public trust in our party,” he said. “We cannot ignore that and jump into a flagbearer race. We must first rebuild confidence in the party.”
The MP also questioned the logic behind the rush to elect a new leader: “We need a very organised and disciplined party to elect a president, not a flagbearer. Those declaring their intentions, what are we standing on?”
Boamah’s comments come as several prominent figures within the NPP begin to position themselves for the party’s 2028 presidential ticket, despite growing calls for introspection and reform from the grassroots.
