A member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alfred Thompson, has criticized the government for its lack of transparency regarding the health condition of Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
Speaking on JoyNews during a news review segment on Monday, March 31, Thompson expressed concern over the limited information provided about the Vice President’s sudden illness, which led to her being rushed abroad for further medical treatment.
“I am just worried about the scanty information given because if you just write that something happened on Friday, Ghanaians need to know what happened on Friday and why she was rushed to the hospital,” he stated.
Thompson argued that, as a public figure, the Vice President’s health status is of national interest and should not be shrouded in secrecy.
“Once you put yourself up for political office, everything about you is no longer private. That is what we need to get straight,” he added.
The NPP communicator also condemned the decision to seek medical treatment outside the country, highlighting the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) previous stance against government officials traveling abroad for healthcare.
“They came on the premise that they don’t see why government officials should go outside for treatment. Have you forgotten what Okudzeto (MP for North Tongu and Foreign Affairs Minister) said, or even the President (John Mahama) himself when in opposition in 2017, saying they don’t see the reason for seeking medical care abroad when Dr. Bawumia had to go outside for treatment?” he questioned.
The Office of the President, in a statement on Sunday, March 30, confirmed that Vice President Opoku-Agyemang had received medical attention at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) after experiencing a sudden illness on Friday, March 28.
The statement, signed by Minister for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu, noted that medical experts advised the Vice President to seek further treatment abroad to ensure her full recovery.
