Shalimar Abbiusi, a spokesperson for the New Force political movement, has been thrust into a whirlwind of legal challenges, including an unexpected re-arrest by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).
Abbiusi, a Belgian national, recently faced charges for allegedly using false documents claiming enrollment at the Ghana Christian University College to obtain a residence permit. Despite being granted bail set at GHc 20,000, the case took a surprising turn when immigration prosecutors, led by ACI Adolf Aboagye Asenso, declared in court that they were instructed to withdraw the charges.
Subsequently, she was discharged, and the case was withdrawn from the court’s docket.
However, upon leaving the courtroom, Abbiusi was swiftly re-apprehended by an immigration van, triggering accusations of a potential deportation plot. Video footage shared by Joy News captured her resistance as she was being led into the van, amid protests from her legal representatives and family members.
Reacting promptly, Abbiusi’s legal team, spearheaded by Francis Xavier Sosu, initiated legal action in the Human Rights Court, denouncing what they deemed as arbitrary actions by the immigration service.
“We have filed an action in the Human Rights court against them… This is so arbitrary and should not be tolerated in any democracy,” Francis Xavier Sosu conveyed during an interview with Accra-based Citi FM.
Concurrently, the Ghana Immigration Service invalidated Abbiusi’s residency permit, asserting the illegality of her continued stay in Ghana. Plans for her imminent repatriation have caused chaotic scenes outside the court premises.
Earlier, state prosecutors dropped all charges against Abbiusi and directed the release of her seized iPhone 13 Pro, citing insufficient incriminating evidence.
As the legal saga unfolded, Abbiusi’s parents exhibited visible distress over the potential deportation of their daughter. The New Force, in a press release on December 7, voiced concerns about alleged power abuse, persecution of political opponents, and human rights violations amidst Abbiusi’s ongoing legal tribulations.
