Kwesi Appiah Temporarily Steps Down from GFA Executive Council Role Ahead of Ghana’s AFCON Clash with Sudan

Ghanaian football coach Kwesi Appiah has temporarily resigned from his role as a member of the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

This move follows a directive from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which requested that Appiah relinquish one of his positions ahead of Ghana’s crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Sudan.

Appiah, who is currently the head coach of the Sudanese national team, also holds a seat on the GFA Executive Council. CAF raised concerns about a potential conflict of interest and called for him to step down from one of the roles.

In response to the directive, Appiah’s spokesperson, Asante Forkuo, announced that the coach has temporarily vacated his position on the GFA Executive Council until the end of November 2024.

“Coach Kwesi Appiah has stepped aside as an Executive Council member of the GFA until November 2024,” Forkuo said. “Following a communication from CAF, which was copied to the GFA, he cited a conflict of interest. Since the start of the AFCON qualifiers, Appiah has distanced himself from all Executive Council activities.”
