Kwesi Appiah Could Return as Black Stars Coach – Former GFA Vice President Suggests

Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has hinted that Kwesi Appiah might be open to returning as the head coach of the Black Stars in the future. His comments come after Sudan, under Appiah’s management, secured a 2-0 victory against Ghana in the second leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, played in Libya.

Appiah’s Sudanese team also held the Black Stars to a goalless draw in the first leg at the Accra Sports Stadium, putting Sudan in a strong position to qualify for AFCON 2025, which will be held in Morocco. Currently, Sudan is second in Group F with seven points.

Afriyie, speaking about Appiah’s recent successes with Sudan, noted that the former Black Stars coach is focused on enhancing his coaching credentials by not only aiming to qualify for AFCON but also striving to lead a team to the FIFA World Cup in 2026, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Afriyie believes that if the Black Stars’ coaching position becomes vacant, Appiah could be considered for a third stint with the national team. “Kwesi Appiah wants to better his CV by qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup, and someday, when the Black Stars coaching position is vacant, he will be considered,” Afriyie said in an interview on Asempa FM’s *Ultimate Sports Show*.

Sudan currently leads Group B in the World Cup qualifiers with 10 points, remaining undefeated. They will complete their AFCON qualifiers with matches against Niger and Angola before turning their attention to the World Cup qualifiers in March 2025.
