Leading New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful and former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has treated 268 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to a lunch meeting as part of his preparations for the party’s presidential primaries.
The gathering, held at his private office in Accra on Wednesday, June 19, 2025, followed the National Council’s announcement of January 31, 2026, as the date for the party’s upcoming primaries.
“Today, I had the honour of meeting with 268 former MMDCEs… We had a frank and forward-looking conversation about the future of our party and our beloved country,” Agyapong shared in a Facebook post. He emphasized the need to rebuild the NPP based on unity, fairness, and grassroots empowerment.
He also addressed concerns about how MMDCEs were treated under the previous NPP administration, citing excessive centralization in Accra that, in his view, diminished local authority and hampered community development.
“Under my leadership, that will change. It’s time to restore dignity to public service and give real power back to the people on the ground,” he said, pledging to make decentralization a cornerstone of his vision.
This engagement comes shortly after more than 60 sitting Members of Parliament reportedly visited Agyapong to express their support for his presidential bid, reaffirming his strong position in the NPP’s internal race.
The 2026 primaries are expected to be hotly contested, with Agyapong, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum among the names anticipated to contest for the flagbearership.
