Supporters of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia have strongly responded to recent comments by Kennedy Agyapong, accusing the former presidential hopeful of spreading falsehoods and showing blatant disrespect to members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a sharp rebuttal to Agyapong’s controversial remarks during a weekend speech in Mampong, the Bawumia camp described his rhetoric as contradictory, divisive, and unfit for someone aspiring to lead the party.

“Ken Agyapong has called NPP members fools and questioned why poor people within the party should even speak. Now he wants to lead those very people? It makes no sense,” a spokesperson for the Bawumia camp stated.

Agyapong had suggested that the NPP’s loss in the 2024 elections was due to the party choosing a Muslim, Bawumia, as its flagbearer. But Bawumia’s supporters dismissed the claim as both sectarian and factually flawed.

“Was religion the reason over 50 Christian NPP parliamentary candidates, including pastors, lost their seats? Did religion cost Kufuor in 1996 or Akufo-Addo in 2008 and 2012? The argument is baseless.”

They also highlighted Bawumia’s clear victory in both the NPP Super Delegates Conference and the main presidential primary, defeating multiple Christian contenders including Agyapong himself.

“If the NPP didn’t want a Muslim leader, how did Bawumia defeat nine Christian aspirants in the first round, and five in the final vote? Are we to believe all delegates suddenly became Muslim?”

On historical accuracy, the Bawumia team disputed Agyapong’s claim that former President John Agyekum Kufuor got a second chance at the flagbearer slot due to a short campaign window in 1996.

“This is simply false. Kufuor was elected in April 1996 and had eight months to campaign. If campaign time was the reason, Adu Boahen—who had only two months in 1992, would’ve been re-elected.”

They further accused Agyapong of contradicting himself.

“First, he blames Bawumia’s religion for the loss, then he blames Akufo-Addo for not appointing enough party loyalists. Which is it? Ken needs to pick a consistent narrative.”

The group concluded by questioning Agyapong’s calls for unity, pointing out that genuine unity cannot be built on insults, misinformation, and condescension.

“You can’t label party members as fools, silence the poor, and then preach unity. If this is who Ken Agyapong really is, then his Mampong speech revealed more than just his opinions, it exposed a troubling mindset.”
