Kantamanto Market Fire: Traders Count Losses After Devastating Blaze

In the early hours of January 2, 2025, a fire broke out at the Kantamanto Market in Accra, leaving traders grappling with unimaginable losses. Known for its bustling commerce and vibrant trade, the market was reduced to rubble, forcing traders to sift through ashes in a desperate attempt to salvage their livelihoods.

The blaze, which started around 1:00 a.m., spread rapidly due to the flammable materials used in the construction of many stalls. Despite the deployment of firefighters and their relentless efforts, the fire consumed a significant portion of the market before being brought under control.

For many, the devastation is total. Ama Mensah, a clothing vendor at the market for over a decade, described her despair:
“I have lost everything—my goods, my savings, everything is gone. I don’t know how I’ll recover from this.”

Similarly, Isabella Apoe, a cold store operator, recounted her losses, saying she had invested millions in her shop, now destroyed.

The fire has left traders like Joshua Tetteh, a clothing seller, in financial turmoil:
“I collected a loan for this business. I’ve lost everything—my wife also sells ladies’ clothing, and her goods are all gone. It’s devastating, but we will rise from these ashes.”

Samuel Ahenkorah, who owned two shops dealing in jeans, revealed his frustration and grief:
“I’ve lost everything from two shops, including bales of goods costing GHC5,500 each. This is so painful.”

Food vendors like Fati Alhassan and Hawa Yakubu also shared their plight, recounting how their equipment, utensils, and food items were destroyed.

Some traders, like Silas Oteng-Akenteng, are attempting to rebuild from the rubble.
“I’m gathering scraps to sell for some income. Things are going to be very difficult because my livelihood is gone, but I’m praying for government support to start again.”

Adutwum Atta Manu, the Market Manager, confirmed that firefighters were able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the market. However, the affected traders are urging the government to provide financial aid to help them recover and rebuild their businesses.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for improved fire safety measures in public markets. While investigations into the cause of the fire are underway, the resilience of Kantamanto’s traders shines through as they begin the arduous journey of rebuilding their lives and businesses.
