President Akufo-Addo has appointed Ms. Julie Essiam as the new Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), replacing Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah. Ms. Essiam, who previously served as the Commissioner for the Support Services Division of the GRA, assumes her new role following the dissolution of the GRA Board and the resignation of the Board Chair, Dr. Anthony Oteng-Gyasi.
The dissolution of the Board, which included members such as Mr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, Madam Adelaide Ahwireng, Prof. Peter Ohene Kyei, Mr. Kwabena Boaten, Mrs. Dela Obeng-Sakyi, Dr. Maxwell Opoku-Afari, and Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, comes amid reported disagreements and accusations of the GRA harassing businesses for taxes due to unrealistic targets.
Ms. Julie Essiam brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having served as the Group Executive at the Ecobank Group, with branches covering 40 countries across North America, Europe, Africa, and other parts of the world. She is known for her professional passion for sustainable transformation and development work, as well as her dedication to investing in the next generation.
Ms. Essiam is the concept originator and founder of Africans4Africa (A4A), a private sector-led development organization focused on contributing to the successful achievement of an impactful transformation of the African continent towards prosperity.
In addition to her role at Ecobank, Ms. Essiam has served on the boards of Ecobank Zambia, the Ecobank Foundation, and three board committees of the Ecobank Group—Finance and Audit, Risk, and HR. She was also a member of the Global Fund Executive Committee and the President of the Private Sector delegation of the Global Fund.
Ms. Julie Essiam’s appointment as Commissioner-General of the GRA is expected to bring new insights and strategies to the authority as it continues its efforts to enhance revenue collection and promote economic development in Ghana.
