Ghana secured a dramatic gold medal victory in the men’s football event at the 2023 African Games, with Jerry Afriyie scoring a stunning 90th-minute winner against Uganda in the final at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Black Satellites started the game strongly and appeared to have taken the lead within the first 20 minutes, but the referee disallowed the goal for an infringement in the box. Despite both teams creating chances in the first half, neither could find the breakthrough, and the score remained level at halftime.
In the second half, Ghana continued to dominate proceedings, with Abdul Hakim Sulemana coming close to breaking the deadlock. However, it was Afriyie who proved to be the hero for Ghana, receiving a pass on the edge of the box in added time and firing a brilliant low strike past the Ugandan goalkeeper to give his side the lead.
The Black Satellites held on to their lead in the dying minutes of the game to clinch the gold medal, repeating their success from the 2011 edition of the games in Maputo. Uganda settled for the silver medal, while Senegal claimed the bronze.
