In response to Constitution Day, scheduled for Sunday, January 7th, 2024, the Government has announced an extension of the celebration by designating Monday, January 8th, 2024, as an additional Public Holiday. This declaration, made under Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601), aims to broaden the observance of Constitution Day nationwide.
The Interior Ministry, headed by Ambrose Dery, released an official statement on January 2nd, 2024, communicating this decision to the public. The statement emphasizes the expectation for all citizens to honor Constitution Day throughout the country.
The release clarified that while January 7th, 2024, marks Constitution Day, recognized as a Statutory Public Holiday, the decision to extend the celebration to Monday, January 8th, 2024, was made due to the holiday coinciding with a Sunday. Through an Executive Instrument (E.I) as permitted by Act 601, His Excellency, the President of Ghana, formalized the additional Public Holiday for nationwide observance.
Constitution Day commemorates Ghana’s 4th republican constitutional dispensation, initiated on January 7, 1993. This symbolic holiday underscores the nation’s commitment to upholding and sustaining the principles of the 4th republic throughout its existence.
