Irish super-featherweight boxer John Cooney, aged 28, has tragically passed away following his defeat to Welshman Nathan Howells in a bout at Ulster Hall, Belfast, on Saturday, February 8.
Cooney suffered an intracranial haemorrhage and underwent emergency brain surgery at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital after collapsing in the ring. Despite efforts from medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries after battling for a week.
In a statement released by MHD Promotions on behalf of his family, they expressed their devastation:
“It is with complete devastation that we have to announce that after a week of battling for his life, John Cooney has sadly passed away.”
The statement also conveyed gratitude to hospital staff for their tireless efforts and to those who offered prayers and support.
“He was a much-loved son, brother, and partner, and it will take us all a lifetime to forget how special he was. RIP John ‘The Kid’ Cooney.”
The contest was stopped in the ninth round, marking what was Cooney’s first defence of his Celtic super-featherweight title.
