
The Ministry of Defence has announced the commencement of investigations into the Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter crash that occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
The crash claimed eight lives, including Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence; Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; and Dr. Samuel Sarpong, NDC Vice Chairman. Also among the deceased were Samuel Aboagye, Deputy NADMO Director-General; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 25, Acting Minister of Defence, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, said an Investigation Board has officially begun its work to determine the cause of the tragedy.
The Board, chaired by the National Security Coordinator, includes representatives from the Ghana Air Force and the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).
The Ministry added that the United States Air Force is providing advisory and technical support through a team of visiting investigators. Other relevant experts and institutions, both local and international, may also be consulted to assist in the probe.
A preliminary team was earlier deployed on the day of the crash to collect evidence, and its findings are expected to guide the Board’s work.
The Defence Ministry stated that the Board has been given 30 days to complete its investigations and submit a report.
