Athletic Bilbao clinched a spot in the Copa del Rey final by comfortably defeating Atletico Madrid, setting up a clash against Mallorca on 6 April.
Athletic took a 1-0 lead in the first leg on 7 February with Alejandro Berenguer converting a penalty. In the second leg, Athletic doubled their advantage early on with Nico Williams assisting Inaki Williams for the first goal. Nico Williams then found the net himself just before half-time, and Gorka Guruzeta added another to secure a 4-0 aggregate victory.
The second leg, which saw Athletic’s highest attendance ever at 52,061, was briefly halted due to a medical emergency in the stands. Athletic later confirmed the person was stabilized and taken to the hospital.
The final, set to be played at Estadio La Cartuja in Seville, will see the winners qualify for the Europa League group stage for the 2024-25 season. Mallorca, who won the Copa del Rey in 2003, secured their spot in the final after a penalty shootout win over Real Sociedad.
Athletic, with 23 Copa del Rey titles to their name, defeated Barcelona in the quarter-finals. Mallorca currently sits 16th in La Liga, while Athletic is in fifth place, one spot behind Atletico Madrid.
