President John Dramani Mahama has issued a stern warning to newly appointed ministers, making it clear that any involvement in illegal mining, known as “galamsey,” will not be tolerated.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of 14 new ministers on Thursday, January 30, 2025, President Mahama reiterated his government’s commitment to tackling illegal mining and announced plans for stakeholder consultations to address the crisis.

“No member of this government is allowed to participate in any form of small-scale mining or galamsey. Anyone found engaging in such activities will face swift and severe consequences. We plan to hold stakeholder consultations on the galamsey menace to build a broad consensus on the steps needed to protect our environment from further destruction,” he stated.

In addition to this crackdown, President Mahama revealed that his administration would revoke all mining leases granted for operations in forest reserves under the previous government. This decision is part of a larger effort to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources and combat the environmental devastation caused by illegal and unsustainable mining practices.

The President assured Ghanaians that immediate actions would be taken to stop mining activities in protected areas, with legal proceedings to follow against violators. His firm stance reflects a renewed government effort to curb galamsey and prevent further environmental degradation.
