Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno has assured journalists of full protection during the upcoming Akwatia by-election scheduled for September 2, 2025.

His reassurance follows recent concerns about attacks on media personnel, including the assault of a GHOne TV reporter by a police officer during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on July 11.

Speaking at a meeting between the Police leadership and the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Accra on Wednesday, August 20, the IGP pledged close cooperation with the media to ensure their safety.

“We’re ready to work with you. I can assure you that Akwatia will be very safe. We will protect you. No policeman will attack you; we are there to protect you. It is our duty to protect you. We’re assuring you that these things will not happen,” he said.

Dr. Yohuno also suggested joint training sessions for journalists and police officers to strengthen understanding and collaboration during election coverage.

The Akwatia by-election was triggered by the death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.
