Former Majority Leader and Suame MP, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has revealed his decision to step down from his leadership role in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to avoid causing division within the party. His exit paved the way for Alexander Afenyo-Markin to become the new Majority Leader.
Speaking on Asempa FM on Tuesday, March 4, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu disclosed that he had been forewarned about President Akufo-Addo’s plans to replace him. “About 80 MPs informed me ahead of time that the president wanted me out. Many encouraged me to fight back, assuring me of their support,” he stated.
However, he chose to resign rather than create a rift within the NPP. “I didn’t want to be the eye of any storm in the party. I felt I had had enough, so I decided to resign and said it there and then,” he recounted.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu also shared details of an emergency meeting called by President Akufo-Addo before the elections. The president expressed concerns about the NPP’s waning influence in the Central Region, particularly with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) gaining ground.
According to Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Akufo-Addo believed that Afenyo-Markin, who is from the Central Region, would be a strategic choice to strengthen the NPP’s standing. The president highlighted the NDC’s momentum, especially with Naana Opoku-Agyemang as a potential running mate to John Dramani Mahama and Ato Forson as the Minority Leader.
