I really feel sorry for the renowned men of God involved in National Cathedral saga– Ablakwa

North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has voiced disappointment and sorrow over the involvement of renowned clergymen on the National Cathedral Board of Trustees following revelations from the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ). The findings, which came in response to a petition he initiated, highlight significant concerns about the project’s funding and transparency.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Ablakwa described CHRAJ’s report as “damning and explosive,” accusing the government of misleading both Parliament and the public. He expressed deep regret over the clergymen’s association with the project, stating, “I feel sorry for the men of God caught in this scandal. I will never wish such a situation for men of God. It’s so unfortunate.”

Mr. Ablakwa criticized President Akufo-Addo for lack of transparency, recalling the President’s initial assurances that the cathedral would be privately funded without reliance on public funds. According to CHRAJ, taxpayer money was indeed used for the project without parliamentary approval.

The lawmaker attributed the controversy to the President’s failure to heed public concerns and follow due process. “This could have been avoided if the President had listened to the cries of the people and followed due process. But he didn’t, and now look at where we are,” he remarked.

The CHRAJ report confirmed that $58 million had been spent on the project without proper oversight, raising questions about its value and progress. The commission has recommended a forensic audit by the Auditor-General to assess fund usage and determine if taxpayers received value for money.
