Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, has commended John Dramani Mahama’s political comeback, stating that his return to the presidency is proof that the NPP can also reclaim power in 2028.
Speaking during his ongoing “Thank You Tour,” Dr. Bawumia admitted that after Mahama’s defeat in the 2016 general elections, he believed the former president’s political career had ended.
However, Mahama’s return in the 2020 elections, despite another defeat, and eventual victory in 2024, he said, has redefined what is possible in Ghanaian politics.
“I never thought Mahama would return as president, but he did. That gives me confidence that the NPP can come back in 2028,” Bawumia remarked.
He drew historical parallels to bolster his point, citing former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s loss in the 1996 elections with 39% of the vote to Jerry John Rawlings, and his triumphant return in 2000.
Dr. Bawumia also referenced the late President John Atta Mills, who polled 43% in 2000 and 44% in 2004 before ultimately winning the presidency in 2008 with just over 50%.
