“I am Deeply Humbled by Mahama’s Confidence in me to Lead the House” –  Bagbin 

Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of the soon-to-be-dissolved 8th Parliament, has extended heartfelt appreciation to President-elect John Dramani Mahama for endorsing his renomination to serve as Speaker of the 9th Parliament under the Fourth Republic of Ghana.

In a statement issued on January 5, 2025, Mr. Mahama officially recommended Mr. Bagbin’s nomination to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary leadership. The President-elect emphasized his confidence in Bagbin’s extensive experience and ability to effectively lead the next Parliament.

Reacting to this endorsement, Speaker Bagbin described the opportunity as a “profound privilege” and a “weighty responsibility,” while expressing deep humility at the trust reposed in him by the President-elect and the party’s leadership.

“I am deeply humbled by His Excellency’s confidence in my ability to lead the august House as we begin a new chapter in our nation’s democratic journey,” he stated.

Reflecting on his long-standing service in Parliament and to the nation, Mr. Bagbin reaffirmed his steadfast dedication to the principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law. He emphasized his commitment to these ideals while pledging to uphold integrity, transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness in the new parliamentary session.

“As Speaker of the 9th Parliament, I will, more than before, rededicate myself fully to the task ahead of the country,” Bagbin affirmed, outlining his vision of strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring Parliament remains responsive to the aspirations of the Ghanaian people.

As the nation prepares for this transition, the current 8th Parliament is set to be dissolved on January 6, making way for the 9th Parliament and the inauguration of the President-elect on January 7.
