Hohoe United Withdraw from Ghana Premier League, Cite Systemic Unfairness

Hohoe United FC have officially withdrawn from the 2025/2026 Ghana Premier League season, citing what the club described as unfair treatment and systemic bias.

The club confirmed its decision on April 1, 2026, following an emergency board meeting, describing the move as a “principled stand against injustice” while accusing the Ghana Football Association of persistent unfairness.

A key issue raised by the club is a disciplinary sanction that compelled them to play three consecutive home matches away from the Hohoe Sports Stadium. The punishment followed security concerns during their league fixture against Vision FC, but Hohoe United insists the decision was excessively harsh and damaging to their campaign.

In addition to the sanction, the club expressed frustration over what it described as questionable officiating throughout their debut season in the top flight. According to the statement, these issues significantly affected their competitiveness and confidence.

At the time of withdrawal, Hohoe United were involved in a relegation battle, sitting 17th on the league table with 30 points after 27 matches. With seven games left to play, the club argued that moving their home fixtures to neutral venues, including Tema New Town, severely weakened their survival chances.

Playing away from their home ground deprived the team of fan support and their tactical advantage, making an already difficult fight against relegation even more challenging.

Under Article 13(5) of GFA regulations, all remaining matches involving Hohoe United will now be forfeited, with scheduled opponents automatically receiving three points and three goals. This development is expected to directly impact both the title race and the relegation battle in the final phase of the season.

The club may also face additional disciplinary measures from the GFA, including possible fines or long-term sporting sanctions for withdrawing mid-season.

This decision marks one of the most dramatic developments in recent Ghanaian football history, especially as it comes during Hohoe United’s first season in the top division. The situation is likely to intensify scrutiny over league governance, disciplinary processes, and officiating standards.
